ringing at Llandinam, St Llonio (6, 5-3-16 in A) a nice but very loud little six. The church is a pretty grim Victorian building, but the situation is stunning. This is a small but pretty village between Llanidloes and Newtown. The bells are an real mixture comprising two Warner bells, one Rudhall, one dating to 1440 (the 5th) and the tenor by Thomas Stone 1640. The treble was recast by Taylors in 1967 and weighs under a hundredweight less than the tenor at 4-3-24, and is heavier than 2, 3 and 4.

  • Never mind the church - the bells sound pretty grim themselves!

  • @simonbellringer they're OK but I do think if the tenor was replaced with a bell that's the right kind of weight (7-8 cwt) for the note, and a bit better in tune, they would be much improved.

  • grat there is something about these old churches just cant put my finger on it but there are some superb one around mid wales ....take care wez

  • @wezchef well in Mid-Wales there are so many, often just very small, humble buildings in magnificent situations. This isn't a particularly special church but the siting of it is stunning!

  • 5cwt, in A? Are they old?

  • the 5 and 6 are old and perhaps one of the others. It's too light really for A.

  • Poor neil, he rung them for a peal - with earmuffs on!

  • if it weren't for the noise, they'd be really nice for a peal, but you'd have blood trickling from your ears after 2 and a half hours!

  • A bit too loud though. I dont like them too quiet either. Its a shame though about it being so loud. Quite a few people from welshpool complained about headaches after ringing there - i wonder why!

  • Yes! They are a bit loud and piercing. I like towers to be quite loud though, it annoys me when good bells are shut away so you can't hear them. However that's unlikely to happen here!
