It's not a new idea in so much as an agreed upon venue internationally financed has been proposed, but never followed through because of loss of national cachet and scope for propaganda. 1936, etc. Greece makes best sense since the Olympics are historically linked to Greece and Mount Olympus, and has a modern Olympic infrastructure, in place. By losing the copyrighted logos and associated Nazi paraphernalia, Greece could take the initiative. Like the Australian Pink Floyd :-)

The cost of the Olympics is ridiculous and the games should be limited to the Greek venue with participating countries contributing towards its maintenance, and the sharing of media income. As for London 2012, it shouldn't be too hard to come across a couple of Russian Oligarchs who would prefer to stump up a billion, in lieu of jail-time in Russia.
