In 2003 myself and filmmaker friend Mike Crisp visited Prospect Cottage in Dungeness - the small house where Derek Jarman (1942 - 1994) spent the last few years of his life.
I have revisited the footage and pieced together some shots to Donna McKevitt's beautiful song "I Walk In This Garden"

  • oh derek. i cried my eyes out in your garden not long after i was diagnosed hiv positive in september 2000. lucky enough to be part of a guided tour inside, i cried my eyes out in your study, the work book for "blue" blurred by tears, in your studio amongst your still opened tins of paint, in your kitchen scarcely believing your blue overalls on the back of the door, and in your conservatory, looking out to your garden of memories. i place a delphinium...

  • I spent my childhood in a small town (lydd) about three miles from Dungeness, My late father worked on the Powerstation- featured in some of the shots on this film...Dungeness has a wonderfull if slightly eerie feeling to it...The light is fantastic and constanly changing...I suspect this is one of the factors that bought Derek Jarman here....

  • Donna has a beautiful voice and Dungeness is a unique quiet place. Reading Dereks' books makes me think he would have been a lovely guy to know.

  • Nice video of such an interesting part of the UK, captures the intimacy beautifully. Great to hear your music, Donna

  • I saw the original film some time ago, late night on Arte a French/German tv station, this video captures & extends the essence of that moving movie

  • One of earth's holy places.

  • much nicer and more real than any other famous english garden. the genus loci of the place has been respected. lovely.

  • the word prospect is so ironic, it means not only the view but the future, and for someone once told I would die of cancer, that's loaded

  • Beautiful voice.A very moving little film,for reasons I can't explain.
