I was born and raised in Birmingham, I stayed in Houston atlanta and memphis tennessee, and now I stay back in Atlanta, I been all over the united states and let me tell you ain't nothing like Birmingham. It's a VERY dangerous city compared to most of the other but it's also a lovely place to live Bham for life

@cameraonself Yes, that is true, but Birmingham is hardly unique in that regard. Cities all across the country, in both northern and southern states, used the Interstate Highway Act as an excuse to demolish poor black neighborhoods. In Birmingham, city planners routed the freeways along traditional dividing lines between black and white neighborhoods.

Ignorance prevails today with the lack of educating ones self before making such irresponsible statements. Birmingham Alabama has been under the control of a minority Mayor 1979 and still thrives as a prominent city among cities, and sits in the largest county in the state. Birmingham leads the world with UAB and its continued growth that offers medical services to everyone from the common citizen to Sheiks and Princes of Arab nations shows that we are not just hicks and redneck racists.

Continued. At the time of the building of the interstate system the residential areas on all sides were mostly integrated and were only separated by flat, level and non residential occupied land. I-65 also was placed in the area it is due to the line it draws sits directly on industrial land. Norfolk-Southern Rail and Tennessee Coal and Iron owned 90% of the land that I-65 sits upon and only old, low value "mixed race" homes were bought and destroyed for the I-65/I-59 & 20 interchange.

That's probably the most skewed and uninformed opinion I have ever heard. The freeway system was not designed to separate areas, the system was designed in an already crowded and populated area. I-59 & I-20 going thru town was placed because of terrain and building placements. The BJCC is against the interstate on the north side, the Jefferson County Jail and Courthouse on the south side. The homes north of BJCC are historic and very old, sitting on the crest of rising terrain.
