Photo's of Avianca Flight 52 2 days after the crash 1-25-1990. 158 people were aboard and 85 survived (They ran out of fuel, so there was no fire, a lot of survivors). I live very close to where the plane crashed. I will never forget the sound as the plane coasted by and then crashed. I didn't go to see it but friends of mine did. These photo's were given to me and taken by Tom Baade. Though I would share them.

Nat Geo Encores: Deadly Delay

A layer of fog blankets New York City causing flight delays up to three hours long. As air traffic controllers at JFK manage numerous planes in the face of a coming storm, Avianca Flight 052 with 158 crew and passengers has been circling the sky for over 77 minutes running down to the last few dregs of fuel. Despite urgent messages from the crew, the air traffic control tower has not given the plane permission to land. At last, clearance is given, but it's too late. The plane crashes into a Long Island hillside killing 73 people. What the ensuing investigation uncovers leaves many wondering if the crash could have even been avoided.

  • In the photo at 0:08, do you the people who lived in that house at the time of the crash? Wonder what it was like for them.

  • The people who lived there left that night and never went back. The new ower of the house contacted me about getting a copy of these photo's and told me the story. I don't blame them, after seeing what they saw must have been horriable.. I wouldn't want to live ther either.

  • @bulletburposmiley Famous tennis player John McEnroe's dad owned the house at the time. It was in an upscale neighborhood.

  • @ShelterDogs McEnroe's family owned the house next door. Their yard was used as a temporary morgue.

  • what plane was it?

  • Hi, I'm am a survivor of this crash, my name is John Osorio and I was 3 back then, I just wish to get in contact with other survivors and specially with the people who pulled me out, ironically I am a pilot too so if you can provide me some intel send it to wootuka@hotmail.com. Thank you

  • all the pilot had to say to air controler was we are down in fuel please let us land first real simple thing to do!!

  • @Mrlucazu No, Avianca dejo de operar los 747 por que el costo de mantenimiento de esos aviones eran altos, aparte que eran unas bestias consumiendo combustible...

  • @87275jean Going 140 mph might have had something to do with it also.

  • It flew over my house in Huntington. By the sound of it, I imagined it crashing into my house and killing me and my family. My friend soon came over babbling about some plane that went down in Cove Neck. We drove there, snuck through the woods, and found the crash. I remember a roll of toilet paper in the tree and approx 11 bodies laid out cover in white sheets. It was very sad to think about this part of life.

  • my mom was supposed to be on that plane , i was born in 1994

  • @lynndecker I see. So author Malcolm Gladwell had it wrong in his book 'Outliers.' That's where I read this. He said it was the McEnroe house that was crashed into. He didn't mention anything about their yard being used as a morgue. Thanks for the correction.
