This red-orange dust storm hit Brisbane just before midday, after smothering Sydney early that morning. It is a fairly rare event, caused by strong winds blowing sand in from the drought affected bushland and desert regions out towards the coastline.

The rain-like sound is actually the wind in the trees. Poor birds were buffetted around all day.

  • wow.-you got the optimal sight from up there, how often does this happen in Brisbane?*****

  • So rarely that I can't remember seeing one like it before. But tonight (it's Sat night) another one just blew in. So I think that counts as two in four days. Or is it just the same one with a lull in between?

  • Makes the lungs want to seize up - holy cow. 5/5 stars, hope all better today -

  • We've just had a second one blow in tonight, but I can't film it - videoing a dust storm at night doesn't really show up ;-)
