@erikzweigle: its your editor, TextEdit in Rich Text mode does that... change text edit to plain text mode or use different editor.

I recently switched from Windows to Mac. My Mac OSX is running perl 5.12.3 and when I create a file and change the extension to .pl everything goes wonky. When I try to run a basic hello.pl program I get:
Eriks-MacBook-Pro:perlscripts erikzweigle$ perl hello.pl
Backslash found where operator expected at hello.pl line 1, near "rtf1\"
Backslash found where operator expected at hello.pl line 1, near "ansi\"
And so on. Any ideas?
