The main problem with Canto-pop songwriting nowadays is the lyrics are based on Mandarin wording rather than how Cantonese is used naturally. ( ofc, it's not the only problem ... )
That's why it tends to come out awkward and sometimes even unintelligible.
afaik, those that do use natural Cantonese wording are not serious work ( i.e they're spoofs, jokes, gangsta songs etc ... ). Quite a shame :/
If someone were to write a serious canto-pop song with natural lyrics, it'll be refreshing !

Guess what, Madarin chicken is more popular than Cantonese chicken. So there's your winner!

Damn, I love Aladdin's voice.

@xuelihu1 eheheeh, wouldn't it be cool if there was a language with 50 tones?
-
@anythingnew this is bullshit. first of all, technically speaking cantonese has 8 or 9 different tones. second of all, whether a dialect has 4, 6 or 9 tones it doesn't make it more or less poetic. For example take a look at Wenzhounese dialect, it has 9 different tones just as Cantonese, but I never heard anyone saying it's poetic or that it sounds nice when sung or spoken. I think its a personal opinion when you say Cantonese or Mandarin chinese sounds better.

@YinYangPeace WHOA! Just found out that Cantonese has 11 tones. lol

To all of you discussing the Mandarin Cantonese tonal thing, here's my view on it. Cantonese is more tonal cuz they have 7 tones while Mandarin has 4. Mandarin has a lot of sh, zh, and ch sounds while Cantonese doesn't have that. That's probably why some of you perfer Cantonese, but I might be wrong.

does anyone know who is singing this as the voices for these two

@Kiwiness a lot of mando songs sound better than newer canto ones because they've got good composition and rhythm, however many of the older canto songs still sound good today. the canto music industry only fell apart recently with whatever they are coming out with now... But still, I prefer canto over mando
@wincipoet
Cantonese is better than Mandarin because it is completed with the 7 tones, unlike Mandarin which has only 4. That's why Cantonese sounds poetic when sung or spoken.
