I would consider the zipit a tool. But you're kinda right it's really easy and a bit satisfying afterwards.
I use spiral metal thingy to do it with though.

I bought this for $2.25 at Lowes.
Worked fantastic. I cleaned two drains in under 5 minutes. No tools...EASY!
Highly recommended.
