India's Holy and Pampered Cows

Holy Cow...no Harry Caray did not coin that phrase. A first trip to India always astounds visitors. Why are all those cows placidly sitting in the middle of traffic? Why do people let them walk into their houses? Why aren't these bony bovines on farms where they belong? What the heck is going on!

Animal life is a central theme in Hindu life and India. All animals are sacred. Jain nuns even carry little mops to dust off the ground before sitting to keep from crushing insects. (While Travels With Sheila tries to see how many flies can be killed with one blow, snarfs down beef, chicken and pork.)

One Hindu scripture identifies the cow as the "mother" of all civilization, its milk nurturing the population. However, it's a different situation when cows no longer produce milk. They are abandoned on the road because it is back luck if a cow dies on your property!
