@Spartiatai300 Tis obvious you have never wielded a spear. Take a broom handle and try using it as a spear. You'll soon learn overarm attacks are awkward at best. With 4 ft of spear behind you, if someone knocks your spear to the side it is very likely to hit an ally behind you.
I'll PM you a video which explain it a lot better than I can in 500 letters.

@demomanchaos It is. Overhand was recorded to be faster and have more strenght. If your using underhand your spear has more unbalance because your holding it at the end. If your using it overhand your spear is actually not hitting your allies in formation. In underhand it is. If you still thinking its bad I can send you a video. And a point of the spear isn't lenght, the point is that it takes a small area to deliver a deadly blow. The lenght is advantage it gives.
Overhand is better.

@Spartiatai300 Overhand is not very good. The point to having a spear is length. What good is an 8 ft spear if you are going to hold it in the middle? Try stabbing someone in the foot, you can't unless they are within punching range. Say someone knocks your spear to the side, in formation that means a buddy of yours just took a hit to the face. Not in formation, the length behind you acts to held move it out of the way and you are dead.
Underarm is better.

@EdikShepherd Almost all people with shields and spears did that. I can send you a video of people using it overhand, its actually practical. Besides, overhand is faster, more strenght, not hitting anyone behind you. Just seems liek the way a spear is supposed to be used. Ofcourse underhand also works in duels, however overhand seems more usefull most of the time.

@Spartiatai300 The Greeks did that first didn't they? I don't see it being anywhere near as effective in single combat as it would be in a shield wall. For one, with the overhand, the spearmen in the second lines could easily stab at the attackers who were already engaged with their front line men using underhand. Wouldn't it just be rather clumsy in one-on-one fights?
Nice! Could you please tell me how the song is called that is playing?? =)

Hi, where'd you get the spears from? What sort of wood are they? Do they have any sort of point on them (wood, rubber, foam, leather, etc)?
mspina33 10 months ago
@mspina33 The spears are simple 2m oak shafts, without points
However we use rubber points now.

Yes we have, but we find that we loose a lot of accuracy and control, and that you really dont need all the power of the overhand grip.

Hi Awesome work!
Looks beautifull, question though. Did you use manuscripts or just figured it out yourself? How long are the spears that you use if I may ask?

Thank you. It is quite an old video by now, and our shield work has changed some.
The spears are around 2m.
we use rubber tips now for safety reasons, we find the sticks to have a little too much power in the thrusts.
