The balloon represents the world, and the numerous locations it travels are supposed to show that the BBC covers everywhere.

It was a spoof ident called "Channel hopping". The "2" symbol from the Blade ident on BBC Two seems to have channel hopped suddenly and fall onto to the balloon.

BBC launched BBC One, and Two Widescreen in 1998. They produced Widescreen idents in 1997.
