Following the concept behind Nikon's R1C1 and Canon's MT-24EX twin lite flash units, I decided to put together (after getting inspiration from some Chinese knockoffs I saw on eBay) a setup that would emulate, if not with the same quality and a bit heavier, what these expensive units deliver for lighting your macro photography.

An important detail I failed to mention on my video is that since these are completely generic units, they will work BOTH on a Nikon or a Canon camera!

The links to the products I purchased (in Amazon) are as follows:

1-Adorama "C" Shaped Adjustable Bracket ($11.95 each):

2-Digital Slave Flash ($6.49 each):

3-Wireless Flash Trigger & 4 Receivers ($36.99)

Additionally I also posted the gear pictures and a complete tutorial in my Deviant Art profile:

If you prefer to buy the real deal (and you have the money) here is a link to a list of your options:

  • Couldn't you trigger these flashes with your on camera flash?

  • @chisler26 Yes you can. But it depends on how you position them, and they won't always respond as slaves, unless the infrared sensor is facing directly at the camera flash. Additionally, when you stack so much stuff for extreme macro, you could also get a shadow from the gear generated by the on-body flash.

  • This looks like a CHEAP weather station with the huge adaptor and enormous flashes.... LOL

  • @SuperEcho777 :) Could you reference the weather station you're talking about so I can get the joke?

  • You are so wrong when you say you have to buy expensive gear to get good pictures. Talent or imagination is all you need.

  • @GTOOtt I NEVER said you need expensive gear. I said, if you have the money, go for it.

But I'm part of a community composed of VERY talented and renown macro photo experts (look it up, macro photo junkies on facebook), and the guys in there with mt-24's and r1c1's really take advantage of their gear to produce some of the best macros I've ever seen.

Again, you can get really cool stuff with alternatives (like I'm proving here), but a good photographer and pro-gear is a win win situation.

  • Thank you for a path you took away from a too complicated one adopted by huge companies and expensive equipment. You reminded me of my first soft box I created. Ammar Keylani Photography

  • @Thiesson3114 If the camera has a hotshoe it should work :)

  • will wireless flashes work with the nikon d3000? I know it doesn't have internal wireless system, but if i put a transponder thing like that on the top?

  • @WestCoastMods Like I said. If you have the money. Spend it.
