All of the clips from this video were taken during one ride (which lasted an hour) on 7/22/11. It's been awhile since I've taken any schooling videos of us doing anything other than WP, so this kind of shows what we've been working on...

Video footage includes:
Western Pleasure--we are currently showing in open shows and AQHA shows (mostly Novice Amateur, occasionally Amateur).

Hunter Under Saddle--currently showing in open and AQHA shows in both Nov. Am and Am. classes, and occasionally Open. This is probably his best class. In the video I'm using my western bit on him, so he's arching too much and not stretching out, but in English tack he does it really well.

Over Fences--I started him over fences and showed in one Hunter Hack class in 2008...and then he got hurt. I haven't done anything since then, but he enjoyed it and I would like to at least do Hunter Hack, so we just started again...as in, three days before this video, so don't be judgemental! I'm using western tack in the video, but before I do any more work over fences or go any higher, I'll at least put my English bit on him...he's too scared to move forward in the WP bit. Nothing in the video was over 18", I don't think.

Lead changes--again, we started these a few years ago and he got hurt before he was ever finished, so we started again this past January. He will now do them perfectly *most* of the time if I'm using two hands and riding very forward, and does them with a little less grace if I'm going slow and using one hand. We've been showing Western Riding at the open shows and our goal is to do it at the AQHA shows. I wish I had gotten better clips, but apparently I caught him on a bad day, because he was fighting me for every change (I was using two hands in the video...he was bucking before that when I was only using one).

Trail--We just started showing it at open shows this past spring and he does pretty well there. He's not ready for the more complex trail patterns at the AQHA shows, and I don't practice it enough (er, at all) at home, but it's fun and it's good for him. He'll try all of it, he just isn't quite as finessed as he should be.

  • He's crossing over really well in the back end on your sidepasses! And those lead changes are looking better and better :D
