The United Nations estimates that more than 100 million people are homeless worldwide. And another one billion people lack adequate housing. Here in the United States, two to three million people (less than one percent of the population) have not had a home for more than a year.
"Typically in homeless services someone is 'out of sight, out of mind' . They get a little bit not homeless , then we focus on the next guy. Because we (Street Soccer USA) build relationships with people, once they get off the street, we follow up that relationship. They stay involved and hopefully it keeps them off the street longer and permanently," Cann explains.

Lawrence Cann says his program helps to break homeless stereotypes.

"No one chooses to be homeless," he notes. "Homelessness is a social issue and we all have a responsibility for it. And so, if we start looking at each other as human beings, that can be the foundation for creating the programs and social structure that will help people get out of homelessness."

  • requires minimal equipment

    minimal dollars

  • Too often, initiatives to help the disadvantaged are begun and then not funded for subsequent years. The help has to be sustained for people to get back on their feet again, exactly what this guy is doing.

  • That is just great!

  • Less than 1% per cent it may be, but to put it in perspective that's nearly the whole population of Southern Ireland (Eire).

That's a very depressing figure for the richest and most powerful nation the world has ever known. Good to see people like Lawrence Cann giving so much of himself to help.

  • soon it will be more..., after they bailed out indymac, they sold it tp so called "private investors", these investors want their profit and they´ll take it from the so called "home owners",

    > you can´t pay the new monthly instalments, well, what a pity, we´ll have to sell your houses guys...

  • This is a beautiful thing. And it is a national tragedy. How sad that we have this many homeless and ten times that many teetering on the edge of joining them.
