solo//4

January 10th 2010

Scott Walton - acoustic bass
Ellen Weller - alto flute
Farhad Bahrami - tar
David Hurley - drumkit, percussion

this concert was presented on the Trummerflora Collectives "Other Ideas at Kava Gallery" concert series.

Several years ago, Trummerflora member Nathan Hubbard presented a one off event entitled solo//3. Somewhat innocently designed as a means for him to play solo three nights in a row, it resulted in a three night festival featuring three performers a night. This was presented at The Space in Mission Hills January 12th/13th/14th 2004, and was quite successful, featuring Ellen Weller, Justin Grinnell, Damon Holzborn, DJ Tenshun, Al Scholl, Jason Robinson and Hubbard.
Six years later we have the next step in the process - solo//4. This time around Hubbard has invited eight performers for two concerts stretched out over two months. Januarys concert focuses on acoustic performances, and Februarys concert will be electro-acoustic. We are very happy to present David Hurleys first solo concert, Scott Walton all the way from Guernica, Farhad Bahrami and the always wonderful Ellen Weller.

Farhad Bahrami
Born to Iranian parents in West Virginia, Farhad started life tottering between two very different cultures. He learned to read music from a Beatles songbook, but also heard classical Persian and Azeri music at home. His list of favorite artists is extensive and covers many continents and centuries. For him now, the purpose of music is less expression than introspection and interaction. Farhad holds a BA in Computer Science and an MA in Music.

David Hurley
Drummer/multi-instrumentalist David Hurley exercises a thoughtful ear to bring a fresh and unique approach to improvised situations and compositional music. A contemporary artist, Hurley incorporates a wide variety of melodic and ethnic percussive instrumentation conveying eclectic vocabularies and coloring his sensitive organic approach to drumming. His latest album, Outer Nebula Inner Nebula, has been hailed as a "resounding breath of fresh air" by jazzreview.com. For David Hurley music becomes a glue between past genres and new ideas transcending all too familiar archetypes. Born in 1978 he has had over a decade of experience contributing to a diverse variety of groups from punk rock to jazz-fusion, Progressive rock, dub, free-jazz, and world percussion music. Outer Nebula Inner Nebula, Hurley's November of 08 debut as a leader has already been breaking ground rapidly working its way into the ear of the jazz community. Notably Hurley prides himself as an avid "street performer" setting up on busy urban streets with all percussion groups and sax and drum jazz duets which he states brings a whole new perspective to live improvisation. An extensive musical background with many years of experience, add confidence to David Hurley's music and ability to crate and improvise with impressive vigor. Hurley plays music with a sharp emphasis on being a performer. He introspectively shines with lively expressions and a talent for his craft.
