  • No, when wine can allow you to do EVERYTHING, but at the moment can allow you to do only a few things.

It would be nice to have the choice of linux, but most linux users are devs themselves and are content with the way it is.

I ordered dapper last month and it should come soon, but i forsee sleepless nights of attempting to get it working with this and that, then to be accosted from some 13 year old in the netherland, blaming everyone but the devs for hardware incompatability.

  • well wine is not supposed to do EVERYTHING, it is there just to make work what it does not natively on linux. there are dozens of free alternatives to most of what you try to emulate with wine.

now you don't need to be a dev to work with *nix, ubuntu has changed that. i only boot to windows about 2 times on a week just to play some of my games (the only drawback).

i don't wanna say which one is better but people should try linux for a month and then decide for themselves.

  • If only wine didn't suck so hard, i might want to use this as my primary desktop.

But alas, development is slow in the world of linux.

  • development is not that slow, my guess is that in a couple of years will be competing with windows side to side. this is because of vista which sucks and the progress on xgl.

about wine, i can do almost anything i did on windows (as an example i like to play with wine+photoshop)

  • far be it for anyone here to know what the difference between proprietary and free (as in speech) software is. You torrent the stuff anyway, dont you. Regardless keep in mind having to keep going to the microsoft owned math store any time you want to buy a patented + (addition jsyk) symbol to do some basic math with.

  • Macs are for people who dont know how to use windows, why would a dev use it?

  • use a mac and eliminate your problems!

dont say you can't play games--you can use boot camp and go into the windows os to play games--hey if you want to toy, use a mac w/ windows(boot camp) and also have linux installed. three os'es on one machine

  • Linux is definitely a great OS, but i must agree that is seems to be the best choise for devs. Surely i am not a pc newbie, but even for me the chance was pretty hard and there are still huge problems with drivers (i know i'd blame ati, nvidia and co. for that, but those drivers are required for a good running linux).

And even the newest Ubuntu version has big problems with a simply wlan connection using wpa keys. And linux is a network system!
