Carol would have been about 14 then. Heifetz treated her and most of the female students with kid gloves, but especially Carol, because he felt that she'd fall apart if he was short with her (this wasn't necessarily true, but it was his perception). He was a bit harder on the guys, which you can see by checking out some of the other master class videos.

Heifetz was able to play the piano well enough to have performed the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto after playing the concerto for violin. He was also a master violist. Ayke Agus mentions this in her book on Heifetz.
