Robert Amyot came all the way from France to join us on Saturday. He played the French pipes and sang for us a song he had written about Culloden. We were honored by his presence. The Lament for Culloden is hosted annually by A Circle of Gentlemen. For more information on membership or the annual Lament please contact us at Admin@circleofgentlemen.info
Here is an English translation, graciously provided by Robert, of "The Last Battle"....
Let us all sing of the valour of a heroic lassie.
A girl of great h...eart; her name is Angélique
Come close ! Gather, fair people! For here is the song
In Culloden she went to engage herself as a soldier
Yes, a courageous heart she had to go thus to war
Dressed herself with her brother's garments
She cuts her hair in mens fashion
And leaves her father's hall with a few ducats.
When she has a pint with her comrades
She is praised amongst all; they call her "Beardless Johnny" !
"With a sword in hand" says she, "then shall we see
If a beard is needed to make a good soldier"
In Culloden moor, a battle is rising
Showing her White Rose, she kills, cuts and slashes
It was misfortune's will that, with the stroke of bayonet ...
A blade pierced her in the stomach
In blood she fell, in blood, half dead
Away swiftly she must be taken
The surgeons, they are running; it is to examine her
"Show us your wound if you are a brave soldier"
"Aye ! If you are brave amongst soldiers, show us your
wound !"
"No, no, do not approach" answers the creature.
"It's only a scratch and I shall quick recover
And I do hope to be back in combat"
Boldly the youngest of the surgeons said,
"Oh no, do not conceal anything: you are a real woman
Just by looking at your eyes and blond hair
One doesn't have to be a wizard !"
"My poor comrades, wounded but meek and patient
I want to die for them with generous courage
Farewell to the beautiful sun. Farewell to the King's Rose !"
A blade pierced her, for the last battle.
The name is AMYOT !

@Chamyot Chrystel, is that you? Sorry for the typo. I had it right in everything except the title. I've corrected the mistake. :)
