  • That is a expansive way to law out a garden.

  • @newtubetubetube Thanks for watching! Yeah, PVC isn't the cheapest way to go, but it's an investment you'll only have to make once. Besides, you don't have to make one for every bed. You can make 1 or 2 just to help you lay things out. You can make a raised bed by simply mounding up the dirt; it doesn't have to be a foot deep for it to be beneficial. As long as the area is covered with mulch or something to help retain water and the soil isn't compacted, you're good to go.

  • Raised Bed?

  • @knightone57 Thanks for watching! Yeah, its not your typical raised bed, but by the time I've added a cover mulch of some sort, the beds are about 3 inches higher than the walking paths. The PVC helps keep the mulch in the beds.

  • I love this! Don't take the critics too seriously, cause a real gardener would see the true value in your ideas. I'm going to do raised beds this year, and seeing it this way, along with your conversation about design, rotation, etc. is very good. I "Got It" the minute I saw your layout, and that's exactly what I needed to see too, because I didn't really want the wood, just the raised beds, and this really helps. I'm going to have markers now for where the soil stops! Bless you for that!

  • @Sheila6325 Thanks for watching! While making up some templates probably won't be your cheapest gardening investment, once you've built them, they'll last forever. Also, you don't necessarily have to build one for every bed. In fact, you can get buy with 1 or 2 just to use to lay out your beds and spacing. Once you cultivate the area or cover with mulch/compost, just pick up the template and lay out the next bed. Anyway, let me know how it turns out for you!

  • Raised beds? Where?

  • If you're just laying out your garden, you should put a post (could be made of anything: a 1x1, a metal pipe, even a thick twig) in each corner of each bed and connect with string/twine. That way you don't have to saw anything permanently and waste a ton of money on PVC. Also, you can break up into smaller subsections. Honestly, I have no idea why you'd use PVC over string.

  • dont get the haters bring you down. sure you overdid it since strings would do just fine, but look on the bright side. you now have all the parts necessary for a hoop house skeleton, just add plastic foil :)

  • @sklikizos yup, i would go with strings as well.. but i did lots of similar silly things in my life as over-doing stuff thats really simple, like in this vid. we all live and learn :)

  • @OhHowHappyGardener said "Yeah, PVC isn't the cheapest way to go, but it's an investment you'll only have to make once."

Except the video is titled 'A poor man's approach'...

  • Thanks for the suggestions... I had started out doing something different, but between the kids and the dog, I needed something they couldn't easily tear up. I already had enough pvc to make 3 of them so I went ahead and made the investment. For me, it eliminated a lot of hassle and simplified the process of laying out the garden and helped me visualize the whole thing. Anyway, thanks for checking out my channel. Hopefully, we'll make some better videos this year.
