This video is meant to show how Sandy behaves differently when walking in the nose halter versus the harness.

My goal with the harness is for Sandy to remain in the lead (he doesn't need to pull). This is because I sometimes take him skiing with me, and he needs to be way out in front so that my skiis don't bump him.

My goal with the nose halter AND collar is that he stay by my side without pulling. I have not tried to walk him with just a collar yet.

(The nose halter is sometimes referred to as the gentle leader, and many other names.)

(The music is by F.B.)

  • Did I miss the harness?

That was nice walking at the end.

Even with a halti you need to train to walk at heel so why not just use a normal collar and some treats?

  • @EightPaws4Hoof

I didn't have video footage of the harness in use-- that's just shown in the photographs.

I first taught with the nose halter because he caught on to it so much faster/easier. With the collar, he had the tendency to pull against it and choke himself.

  • that music is torture

  • lol, yeah we're a little out of tune in places.

  • I just tried a Gentle Leader on my 2-yr-old Shepherd-Boxer mix tonight. Incredible! The 60-lb. dog that used to drag me down the street, lunge at other people & dogs is now sedately walking by my side in just a matter of minutes. He flipped out a bit at first, and probably will again from time to time, but for the first time, I can walk him without wearing an arm brace (carpal tunnel issue) and he doesn't hurt me.

  • Wow, I'm glad that you've found something to help you! I can imagine that a Shepherd-Boxer mix must be extremely strong.

  • It's almost impossible to teach a dog to heel using a harness. When you pull, it has no effect, and if you pull hard, you make the dog rear up, increasing the level of dominance. A collar or nose halter makes a slight correction meaningful, and helps reinforce the relationship between the dog and the handler.

  • i got my dog a head halter a couple months ago and it worked great except that some of the ppl who walked her dident stop her from scratching her nose every time she walked so she gave herself a scar on her nose, its healed now so i might start using it again soon

  • @Luke13PL Hi -- sorry for the huge delay in replying. I would say it took a couple of training sessions for Sandy to learn how to walk with the nose halter. The treats really helped him learn quickly, because he's very food-motivated. At first, he got a treat each time he stayed at my side, especially if he looked up at me.

  • im trying to decide if i should get a harness or a halter

    i might get both though

a harness for when i ride my bike with my dog and a halter for when i take her on regular walks

im just nervous she wont like the halter

how long did it take you to make your dog walk like that???

    plz reply

  • excellent video!
