This song is called Empty Pockets...not Purple Avenue.

This song bites me, every time i listen to it, it destroys a part of my soul.
-
"Oh, why does August try so hard, so hoist me on my own batard.."
God, the way that comes in in that different key, just kills me, and then...the bomb...
"The shadows fall, I cannot thread....
The tenor of the things you said."
Just kill me now, as I have just witnessed true genius.. I'll listen to this my whole life and never tire of it.
Too bad Tom doesn't sing this style live any more....no matter what tunes he plays....new or old.

THis tune...Empty Pockets is on The reissue of One From The Heart (CD) and it's part of a suite, (Which Tom Excels at) and is so amazing, so classic, that the idea that it was not on the album to begin with, is......anethema.
What a genius. Get the reissue CD.

I've been looking for this one - beautiful!

In the DVD of the film's 2004 re-release, there's the section on how Waits put together the music for the film. Crystal Gayle is seen singing some of the lyrics of this tune, and it's a wonder it didn't make it onto the album or the film. It could have been another duet, as the three on the album are superb.
