Japan vs USA, Women's World Cup 2011 final penalty shootout, July 17, 2011, Frankfurt, Germany. Tobin Heath's penalty kick is stopped by Japan's goalkeeper, triggering a celebration by members of the German Women's National Team, who are watching from the stands. The one with the hat is Nadine Angerer, Germany's goalkeeper, who made a fatal error against Japan eight days before by being out of position and allowing Japan to score the winning goal in the 108th minute to knock Germany, the host team and favorite to win World Cup 2011, out in the quarter final.

  • Is there any problem for Americans about this Japanese Player in these videos below?

At least those millions of German people above were rooting for Japan & reacted like these GermanNT Girls on this video.

If there is an American superstar like Shinji Kagawa in this German BundesLiga, I'm definitely sure that more German people would have rooted for USA like what they did to Japan.

  • @jennymedia Yes, there is "a reason" which maybe different to what you suppose. Bresonik is the teammate of Kozue Ando in Duisburg. Angerer & other Frankfurt players should remember for (also fans of) Inamoto & Takahara. Pierre Littbarski, Thomas Kroth, and Guido Ulrich Buchwald were also rooting for Japan because of their background to J-League. But you should know that Jürgen Klinsmann was rooting for USA. There are not as many US players who contributed BundesLiga as Japanese players.

  • What is wrong if Germans team support Japan. Everyone have their own right to support which team they like. Some American act like everyone should support their team and labelled them as rude if they didnt.

  • @vnessie1 Kumagai actually joined to FFC Frankfurt after this WC. Ali Krieger in USWNT who speaks fluent German joined to FFC Frankfurt long before Kumagai who cannot yet speak German. People in Frankfurt including these German WNT Players in this video should more remember for Junichi Inamoto & Naohiro Takahara who worked for Eintracht Frankfurt to win the MVP & the qualification to the UEFA Champions League.

Krieger & Kumagai are very good friends to work DF together for FFC Frankfurt now.

  • and Saki Kumagai plays for FFC Frankfurt so she has many teammates from the German NT.

  • Since Nadine Angerer, Kim Kulig, Melanie Behringer, and Fatmire Bajramaj belong to FC Frankfurt maybe they are all fans of Junichi Inamoto & Naohiro Takaraha who used to play for Eintracht Frankfurt and contributed this Team to play in UEFA Champions League. I suggest that this maybe another reason they all cheered for Nadeshiko Japan.

  • I don't understand German, but you can also refer to this video: watch?v=gSogHYWSzD0 which is the Charity Match between FC Dortmund and Team Japan before the Women's World Cup. Thank you to German football fans' kindness & great spirit to Japan.

  • @juki0h It's not that stereotipical WWII background. It's more simple reason I've noted below. Japan Men's National Team Players are more famous & popular than U.S. Men's National Team Players in Germany. I know about Bradley and Klinsmann, but Kagawa, Uchida, Okazaki, Hasebe, and the others below have been more exposed on German Sports Media. You should know that Klinsmann was cheering for the USA. But Littbarski in other hand was cheering for Japan.
