  • what does it mean when there is a pattern in the residual plot (parabolic). it says in my textbook that there should be no obvious pattern.

    This is a counterintuitive topic. Whenever there is a pattern- a parabolic shape- this means that a line (aka- linear regression) is not a good model for this set of data. If you were to look at a residual plot that produced this residual plot, the points would not have a straight/linear pattern. When it comes to Residual plots, the more random, the better. What I mean by 'better' is that the point have a strong linear pattern.
