The wrap on the olympic squat is that it is hard on the knees, but this is wrong. Try an olympic squat and then a squat where you stop at or above parallel (a partial squat). You'll see that the toughest part of the olympic squat motion (when your ass is below parallel) puts less force on the knees.

Getting below parallel is better for the knees. Doing those partial "power squats" is bad for the knee as the motion must be stopped at parallel (stress on the acl) and started again with the knees. Stay healthy and go ass to grass.
