The engine was drawn in red, like a fire truck, because when this was written most things were drawn in red, blue, yellow, green. orange was a very uncommon color, unlike nowadays where orange is a cheap substitute for red.

Keep in mind that this book was written in the early 1900's, when horsepower was rated differently than it is today. I read this and Mike Mulligan to my mother's first grade class when work is slow.
