Some dogs are more prone to eye problems than others. Toy breeds, for example, tend to have more debris in their eyes. This is most likely due to the fact that their tear ducts are more narrow than normal and the excessive tears stain the corner of the eyes. No matter what kind of dog you have, it is important to keep their eyes as clean as possible. In this video clip and blog post, Dr. Wendy explains and demonstrates how simple it can be to clean your dog's eyes.

Step 1- Restrain your dog! A table and a helper may be necessary depending on how cooperative your dog is. For larger dogs, the floor may work best.

Step 2- If your dog has long hair, you may need to gently clip the hair around the eyes first but BE CAREFUL as you do not want to injure his/her eyes! If you do not feel comfortable clipping hair around the eyes, a groomer can most likely help you with this.

Step 3- Carefully instill a couple of drops of pet safe eye cleaning solution in the each eye. Make sure what you are using is pet safe as over-the-counter human products tend to be more concentrated and can actually irritate the eyes. There are many pet safe eye washes available such as Tomlyn Opticlear Sterile Eye Wash for Dogs and Ark Naturals Eyes So Bright for Dogs/Cats. You should consult with your veterinarian and/or groomer for a recommendation.

Step 4- Gently wipe any additional debris away from the corner of the eye going from the middle eye corner outwards so you do not push any dirt or bacteria back into the eye. You can use a damp cotton ball or gauze sponge to do this or you can use one of the many commercially available eye cleaning pads.

Step 5- If your dog has brown staining around the eyes, you may want to consider using a product that specifically helps with this problem. You should consult with your veterinarian and/or groomer regarding using one of the many commercially available tear staining cleaners or food supplements that are available.

Step 6- Praise your dog with kisses/hugs and/or treats! Make sure your dog recognizes eye cleaning as a positive experience.

Always check your dog's eyes each time you clean them. If the eyes look red, swollen, or the discharge from the eyes seems discolored or excessive, consult your veterinarian immediately as topical eye medications may be necessary to solve deeper eye problems such as conjunctivitis (infection of the mucous membranes of the eyes). There is no set frequency to clean your dog's eyes. This should be done on an as needed basis or as directed by your veterinarian. That is really all there is to it! Keeping your dog's eyes clean can help prevent infection and help keep your dog healthy and happy.
