A state government committee is pushing for a major overhaul of Tasmania's pig farming regulations.
The Animal Welfare Advisory Committee is urging the government to ban the use of sow stalls, or cages, due to concerns about animal welfare.
They want the use of stalls restricted to six weeks by 2014, with a complete ban to come into effect by 2017.
Lyn White from the animal welfare group, Animals Australia, told the ABC's Stateline program that Tasmania could become the first Australian state to adopt such a ban.
"It's fantastic that Tasmania may well be leading the rest of Australia in this," she said.
"Someone has to lead in circumstances like this and to say we were wrong, animals should never have been treated like this," Ms White said.

Why 2017? Why so far off? Why can't it be sooner. Our USELESS government wouldn't be prepared to spend 5 minutes in a sow pen themselves, but are happy to inflict this cruelty on these highly intelligent animals. Sick of the way animals in this country have different laws depending on what they are. Dogs and cats are treated like royal, yet pigs and cows and chickens are not. Where is the justice in that? What the hell have you done Julia Gillard on animal welfare? Nothing you fat assed bitch.

How could a pig farmer turn a blind eye to the suffering of his own pigs. What a bastard that man was. He could see the pigs had maggot infestation and chose to go back inside and eat his dinner. I hate people like him.
