A copper wire sculpture of a dragon in progress, uploaded for review for a custom order. The dragon measures 17 inches wide, 13 inches high and 11 inches deep at the moment. When wings are added (and the fourth arm, spines, cool whippy bits around the face), I expect the height and the width to increase. Wings will have stained glass incorporated into them.

This dragon is being made with stripped copper electrical wiring.

  • hi folks - sorry for the delay. I'll try and record myself making a wire sculpture from the beginning one day. I can't commit to when.

To start, I create a profile of the creature - kinda like what a shadow would look like projected on a wall. That runs through the centre of the sculpture. Then the three dimensional stuff gets built out from that initial form. Arms, legs - stuff that projects out from the body - all get added later.

  • Hi Robin - sorry I didn't see this until now. These are all cold connections. A wireform in heavier wire(smaller guage) with a lighter wire(higher guage) used to bind the pieces of wire together at the intersections. I sometimes use a sort of backstitch looping, like in sewing, to keep the wires where I want them to be. I also use weaving and basketweaving techniques, according to what I need to do. Did I come even remotely close to answering your question? Cheers, Lisa
