You have to understand that not every martial art is trying to focus on practical application. Concepts are being passed on that can at anytime be gleaned and reworked for real use. The tools are there in the shed so to speak. These arts were used on battlefields where the sword ruled. Their application has been tested against the unforseen under conditions none of us today have seen.

@Majki1970 Actually, I believe that the kicks and punches found in Jujutsu are called Atemi-Waza, and are not Karate based. Karate began in Okinawa in the mid to late 1800's from a combination of Kung Fu and Okinawa Te, centuries after Jujutsu had been established. Aikido is also not a part of Jujutsu. Aikido is actually an offshoot of Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu, which is itself a style of Jujutsu. Judo was created in the late 1800's from a combination of several styles of traditional Jujutsu.

@lotd214: No, jujutsu is actually formed of three different martial arts: karate (you can see in this demo kicks and punches), aikido (throws, grapplings) and judo. What you probably know as jujutsu and what's been promoted on media as Brasilian jujutsu is actualy judo art which when came to Brasil was called jujutsu.

@WingChunGeologist Try to go to japan! lol I found a place, but far from my home, an hour drive. But my senei's sensei is in japan, and is named "intangible cultural asset." Ps wing chun is awsome, and I find it weird/intersting as to why with this onslaught of mma, people keep dissing wing chun.

@grassy thank god somebody understands. From the explosion of MMA, finding an oppinnion like yours is like a needle in a haystack. lol. PS i am studying yoshinryu jujitsu in canada, but am taking time off due to health reasons.

@llamatronic When you learn an art you use what is useful, discard what is useless and ad your uniqueness to it. So says that greatest martial artist who ever lived.
-
@8dahar1 Traditional art train using traditional weapons because that was what available at the time. Traditional art teach combat principal and strategy that apply to any situation. The particular techniques and weapon are not important. Until you see that, you have missed the point.
-
@grassy The traditional arts are the practical one.

@FredDude27 Judo isn't much good as a self defence especially against multiple attackers. Its purely a sport & nothing else.

form of aikido?

Nope. Actually it is prolly more like the other way around. Aikido is a new construct with relation to the samurai grappling arts, more specifically the Daito Ryu aikijutsu. This clip here, Hontai Yoshin-ryu, is just one of many grappling arts wich includes Daito-ryu that Aikido is based on. :-)

As a further comparison: the modern art of Judo is derived from various classical grappling arts including: Tenjin Shinyo ryu and kito-ryu (among others). Judo is more streamlined to fit the modern world though but still has the same root as both Aikido, Daito-ryu and Hontai Yoshin-ryu among many MANY more.
