As The Other One winds down, Jerry goes to deep deep space.
Destination: the theme from Close Encounters. The opening notes of
St. Stephen signal the end of the trip to outer space. EPIC.

  • Wait...where is the close encounters theme? At what time in the video?

  • @schach420 He's hinting at it throughout the solo, but the full blown "theme" is at 4:42 or so...

  • If you listen, Jerry gets to a point where it is only him doodling. I was there (3rd row) and amazed to see the rest of the band sit down and like the rest of the audience, have their jaws on the floor. When Jerry starts St Stephen, the rest of the band was caught off guard, Phil was visibly upset that Jerry started St Stephen without him.

  • @Lindy8018 REALLY??? THAT is something I wish I had seen w/my own two eyes - and, that's why we all went to so many shows (directed at the people that kept asking me and still sometimes do, why I went to so many "concerts" from the same band)...you never know what could happen! Thanks for the visual Lindy, cheers! :D

  • She leaned over to me and said she really wanted to hear Jack Straw. I yelled up to Bobby " Hey Bobby, The Lady wants to hear Jack Straw. He looks around to the band and goes into Jack Straw. The look on the redheads face was priceless and she asked me "Who are you??" Just a Dead Head. (know better than to pick up women tripping at a dead show.)

  • @Lindy8018 HAHAHA! So true, stuff like that USED to happen at Dead shows all the time. But hen after Jerry's coma...it became rarer and rarer. Just this ONE solo (and it is a true SOLO...he's playing alone-just him and the Wolf!) talk about an under-rated and under-appreciated guitarist!!! He's doing effects w/his pedals, fanning, playing a million miles an hour and then slowing it down leading up to that amazing theme...all up and down that fretboard....it's magical and BRILLIANT! :)))

  • I was there. My second Dead show. For hours afterward, I didn't even know what planet I was on - though I was only blocks from home.

  • Sep. '78.... outside Seattle Paramount... had never seen Dead or even pics but friend had played a lot... so for me taking him to Zeppelin year before...he took me to Dead...(he had to go to UofW in day) so I was just hanging out on side of theater. Dude walks up and asks for a hit of what I had... Sure ! I said, "Look at that cool round building."... He said, "Yeah, that's wild. Thanks and I'll see you." He knocks on door and goes in.

Show starts and holy crap !!!! IT WAS JERRY !

  • @xneapolisx exactly why i've been seeing creek for 20 years. you never know. each show played is always their best.

  • Apparently Jerry Garcia was actually in the film during the India scenes. Haven't seen him though

  • @xneapolisx

This show had so much goin' on. The parking lot was next to a cemetery!!! Dead Partying until the doors opened. My ticket was in the balcony but I ran up front and sat down 3rd row 3rd seat from center isle.

Guard walks up and tells me that the seat I'm in is his girlfriend's. She couldn't make it and He told me to enjoy the show!!!!!

In the 1st set, Jack Straw was a direct request. In the seat next to me was a gorgeous redhead girlfriend of the lady whose seat I was in.

  • this is what you might call..... THE SHIT!!!!
