Hellbenders are North America's largest salamander, growing up to 2 feet in length! One of the healthiest populations of this rare species is found right here in the north Georgia mountains. The Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources began a long-term monitoring and survey effort focused on eastern hellbenders in 2011. Wildlife Biologist Thomas Floyd (GA DNR Wildlife Resources Division - Nongame Conservation Section) recently led a small crew on the last survey of the hellbender monitoring season.
