Salvia

Salvia Divinorum is an increasingly popular recreational drug. A law was passed recently in California which makes salvia illegal... if you are under 18 years old... starting January 1st of 2009.

Is this a video of me smoking salvia? Is it a video of my friend having a bad salvia trip? Is it a me freaking out after smoking salvia? Are you going to see me smoke salvia? Will there be a crazy salvia trip? The answer is simple, no. You will not see me freaking out on salvia divinorum. Why then you ask do I elaborately spell out all the things this video is not?

Well, I figure if you really want to know what this video is about, you'd be watching it by now. I guess this description box isn't really to say what the video is about, but rather to add additional information and links. Oh well, I'll do it my way, you do it your way.

This video is about Salvia. I've seen a lot of videos here on YouTube of people smoking salvia. Some people scream in terror after smoking salvia, some pass out smoking salvia, others stare blankly into space and simply trip out on salvia. One of the more popular videos, which I am guessing will show up as a related video, so I won't bother linking it, is Driving on Salvia. There is a slightly amusing unexpected ending to the video "Driving On Salvia."

Salvia has been compared to LSD and shrooms. The main difference is that the effects last only a few minutes. So why then did the California legislature decide that this drug wasn't serious enough to immediately outlaw? In fact, they seem to view it so mildly that they not only made it illegal only for people under 18, but also had no sense of urgency what-so-ever by making the law take effect January 1, 2009.

So am I missing something here? Are the accounts overblown? Do the videos on YouTube really make Salvia look crazier than it really is?

What do you all know about it? I'm curious.

Okay, I'll admit, I am also curious to see if I get more views by titling a video "Salvia." That might also have something to do with me spelling it out so clearly what this video is not about... not that I am fishing for key phrases that people might search for. No, not me. I'd never do anything like that. (fingers crossed.)

So, get out your salvia divinorum, fire up the bong and take a hit. The trip will be over by the time you finish watching the video. Do they really sell salvia in tobacco stores?!

P.S. OK, I looked it up on Wiki. They make it sound fairly safe, albeit intense. So why is marijuana illegal again?

You seem to be impression that it should be made illegal. Hmmm, just paying lip service to the hippie movement with your long hair and "NorCal" style I see. It's okay, I'm sure the chicks love it. The fact is, outlawing Salvia is sad, but not unexpected given U.S. drug policy. It's true. The trip lasts only a few minutes, and you should not under any circumstances drive on the stuff. Tho I wouldn't think you'd want to. It should be made legal, along with most other drugs, but it probably won't.

I'm definitely not a hippie. Sorry, if I gave the impression that I think Salvia should be illegal, that's not the case. I just wondered how they call something dangerous... but not so dangerous that we can wait a while for the law to take effect. It seems like that is an admission that Salvia is not really so harmful (and therefore implying that the law against it is unjust to begin with.) Just seems like the whole thing is a contradiction in itself.

I'm sure he already knows the facts. IN MY OPINION, salvia is fine, but not at 18. Salvia is fine, once you know about it, and have made a responsible, mature decision about whether or not it's right for you. Meh, just my two cents. =]

Thanks. I wasn't sure why so many viewers were so upset by this video. I didn't think I was "putting down" the use of Salvia. It was indeed just a curious question. Upon re-watching this video, maybe they are upset because I was obnoxious about this not being a "I'm freaking out on Salvia" video. Oh well, whatever. I'm just glad some people still get it.
