Continental Method aka German Method sometimes called Left Handed Knitting
Officially, anyone who holds the yarn in their left hand is a Continental knitter. Some continental knitters wrap the yarn between the needles to knit it, and some simply scoop, or "pick", the yarn with the needle. The latter requires fewer hand movements, and has a reputation of being the fastest method of knitting there is. This is my preferred knitting method.

Thank you for this tutorial. I've watched several of your videos and they are all very helpful. Today I took a class at a yarn store and was told that I was knitting wrong. But watching your videos I'm sure I'm doing it right, at least what feels right for me. Is there another way to do the knit stitch? I was told that I'm supposed to go into the back of the stitch and then wrap the yarn around the needle toward me (not away). Is this right?

There is no "wrong" way to knit, especially if you're enjoying yourself. ;) I'm not sure what you're describing/asking. If you were told you were doing it wrong, you might be a Combined knitter. Not wrong, it's a legitimate way, but it does require modifications, so best to go into it knowing how it's different. On our official website with all of our free videos, you can watch all of the knitting methods: knittinghelp. com , look under "free videos" / "knit"

Agree with Desiree and Gitte! Once you get the hang of it it is fast and very gentle on your wrists, especially if you use circular needles.

I've knitted this method for 25 years now and its super fast and produces very even stitches. I can churn our sweaters in less than a week this way

This was so helpful. I am a slow knitter with the way I was taught. I feel clumsy. This feels much more comfortable, my hands don't cramp and my wrists don't hurt like the way I was taught. Thank you so much!

I attended a one-on-one lesson to learn Continental. I struggled with purling for several weeks and finally gave up. Your knitting demo clicked, especially following the "nursery rhyme." I hope my next attempt at Continental purling will be much smoother. Thank you!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I decided to try my hand at this stitching method and was having the worst time controlling the yarn and keeping the stitches from being so tight. I find it much easier to wrap the yarn around my index finger only instead of the second method you showed. It doesn't seem comfortable and the yarn keeps sliding though and off my fingers anyway, no matter how hard I try to keep it closed off. So anyway, thanks for your help.
