Over a quarter of a million people will be taught about rail safety through a video scripted by a UCLan student.

Third year script writing student Graham Windle has written a 50 second rail safety film that Northern Rail has made to be shown on television and in schools, hospitals, department stores and libraries in the North of England.

He was given the opportunity after the company approached UCLan with a brief for the film to raise awareness of the dangers of playing near rail tracks.

David Wilkinson, Community Safety Manager for Northern Rail, commented: "UCLan was an obvious choice for us to tap into a creative resource and the quality of the scripts we were given was amazing. What Graham presented to us was professional, snappy and importantly was appropriate for a wide target audience."

Graham was rewarded for his efforts with a commemorative plaque and a free 12 month rail pass at a presentation held in UCLan's Media Factory building. Graham came to UCLan as a mature student after a career in electronics and said that having his worked chosen for the film had really boosted his confidence.
"If this film raises awareness and saves even one life it will make a massive difference. It's great to see my work brought to life and I really like how Northern Rail has adapted my idea" he said.
Two other scripts submitted by UCLan students to Northern Rail were also commended by David Wilkinson at the presentation. The Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Communication, Mike Ward, commented: "To be able to work so closely with industry shows the value of higher education and it's fantastic that our students' work is being used professionally."
