One more thing, there are a number of types of native ants in Australia (such as jumping ants and bulldog ants) with very painful stings, and there are records of people dying from anaphylactic shock following being stung by these ants. So there are more than 3 species of terrestrial invertebrates in Australia that can be life-threatening. Once again, the minor threat of these creatures should not make anyone feel they need to avoid the Australian outdooors.
They are a good excuse to give your beloved a very close inspection when you both come back from a day in the bush dodging hoop snakes and drop bears ;). BTW, Australia is far from having a monopoly on nasty ticks - they are in North America, Europe, Africa etc, and the tick-borne diseases are worse in these areas than in Aus. We don't go around worrying it may be our last day on this earth before a tick ends it all. One more thing, ecologically speaking they are ectoparasites, not predators.
If he was an Australian guy, the tick would have had to crawl to his groin, armpit, abdomen or the back of his head to pierce his skin, but the tick sensed he was an Englishman with soft, fair skin, and went him on the arm instead. Usually you will feel an itch and you can get them off before they do too much damage, but I did have a large one latch onto the back of the head for a coupla days and I felt lethargic for about 6 weeks. Nasty llittle shits but not the threat this makes out.
fuck i wanna move now!
