How many films can warm the heart like this one

I feel so nostalgic every time I see Tati's movies, particularly this one and Mon Oncle. And yet, I've never lived in the France of the 50/60's. It's odd, being nostalgic of your parents' youth, isn't it?
Anyway, this is a great classic.

BRILLIANT movie; just love it. The hotel is STILL THERE and exactly the same! How I'd love to live there!

Yes, I believe the car is an Amilcar. My first car was a bit similar. It was an Austin Seven Special, with a hood but no doors. I called it 'The Pram'. I agree with all you say about the film. I saw it when it first came out, and laughed myself silly. Now it has come to mean even more to me, having seen it many times over the years. Its richness of observation is remarkable. It does indeed capture the mood and feeling of a type of holiday experienced by many in the early postwar period.

Very interesting that you happen to have been born in St Marc-Sur-Mer. A delightful village. I went to stay twice in the Hotel de la Plage because I was so captivated by the film. It was annoying to find that some thoughtless person had removed M Hulot's pipe from the statue of him: it was so much a part of him.

Idiomatic French.

It's perfectly possible to feel nostalgic about a past age that lies outside our own experience. The film portrays many eccentricities characteristic of the English with which we can identify, not least the setting itself - the annual summer seaside holiday - with which we have a kind of love/hate relationship. But mostly love, I think, or we wouldn't keep repeating the ritual.

Don't leave it too long. It's been pretty much my favourite film since I first saw it way back in 1953. It's best seen in a small cinema environment.

I came here because dear Sir McKellen said it was his favorite movie! And it sure does look good, I might watch it in a little while :)
