Sharply criticized BP Plc (NYSE:BP) CEO Tony Hayward has canceled Tuesday's appearance at an international oil magnate meeting, and the company refuses to disclose Hayward's whereabouts.
Hayward was scheduled to deliver a speech at the World National Oil Companies Congress in London, titled "Key roles and responsibilities of international oil companies in an age of uncertainty."
BP spokesman Jon Pack issued a statement to the press, saying that Hayward is busy with a "very heavy schedule of commitments," however, Pack did not reveal where Hayward will be Tuesday or whether the CEO is scheduled to return to the Gulf Coast region.
Media reports have surfaced alleging that Hayward has been sidelined by BP, as oil spill costs as of Monday morning reached $2 billion.
Hayward came under further criticism over the past weekend when he reportedly left clean-up efforts in Louisiana for England, where he took his yacht out on the water for a race, as Gulf waters continue to be polluted.
White House spokesman Bill Burton poked fun at Hayward's yacht trip, saying: "... if Tony Hayward wants to put a skimmer on that yacht and bring it down to the Gulf, we'd be happy to have his help. Tony Hayward...took himself at his word that he was going to get his life back here. It's clear that he has. But what's important to us is that the people in the Gulf get their lives back. It's not so easy for them to just take a weekend away and forget about everything that's happening down there."
Shares of BP are trading down 4.97% Monday afternoon at $30.18.
Who cares! How about reporting the great things the people of the gulf coast are doing in the clean up efforts instead of demonizing everyone.
