My first attempt to mix greensand for metal casting. The sand was excess from the laying of imitation turf and rescued from the ground where it was sieved through a fine screen. In all, 87kg was picked up, for the greensand mix I have used 44kg, keeping the remainder for lost foam where the sand will be placed in an aerator so the foam can be pressed into the sand easily.
The sand was first dry mixed with 4.4kg of bentonite clay (no polymers) that was purchased from a water bore driller and was then mulled by hand adding 1.2 liters of water. The greensand was then stored inside an old esky (icebox) where over the next two days (on and off), was tipped back out on a tarp and hand mulled with a trowel before being returned back to the esky to soak again.
