This was a dive on some Sunshine Skyway Bridge Pilings that were dumped in about 50 feet of water. There are two parts to this video, so please watch them in order, Sunshine Skyway Pilings Part 1 and 2, out of Cortez, Florida with Capt Bob and bluewaterexplorers.

  • location? I have fished the bridge in the bay and that tide rips through there. Where are these pilings?

  • navydiver190,

These werent the pilings that held up the bridge. I get it now that you mention, how it could be misleading. This was a pile of the old bridge pilings that were taken and dumped by barge on the bottom about a 40 min. ride out on a dive charter boat. I am sure it is illegal to dive 1000 feet within any bridge pilings, (especially nowadays) so I would never be caught near them, otherwise, I would hope someone would suspect something and call the law.

  • I know I would! I hope this clears it up. This was in about 60 feet of water.

  • well that makes sense. looks like a nice dive. I will have to do it. my brother lives in Apollo Beach. I will give it a try. what wrecks do you recommend in that area?

  • Two wrecks that are right by each other are the Sharidan and the Blackthorn. They are kind of out there a ways, I havent got to dive these yet but I hear the Sheridan is awsome. Check the vis. before going out, I like diving with the outfit bluewaterexplorers in Cortez. Capt Bob runs an w=awsome dive boat. That's the boat we took for the dive you watched about the downed pilings. Let me know when you go, I almost have my boat back together, we might be able to go togther one day.

  • Ya, this was about a 30 min run out the bridge that goes to Ana Maria, We dove with an outfit called Blue Water Explorers which is in a buliding painted red with a big white "Scuba Shack" on it. Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed it. I hope to post many more as soon as I get my boat in order.

  • Last time i was at the skyway in my boat fishing a shark swam up next to us as long as the boat.

  • oh shit be careful that part of florida are native to hammerhead shark

  • View the bridge on google or mapquest you can see the rocks thru the water all over its cool! See layout

  • I think I saw some mangrove snapper in there after the sheepshead...cool

  • is this by bradenton beach/anna maria? how far out were you? cool vid!

  • Most were snapper, grouper, and hogfish, The big school were baitfish, not sure but I think they were some kind of shad. The bridge pilings were visible, but like you said they were covered in a lot of growth. I found a cable and rubbed some off in one of the videos. I think they were more visble in Part two. Thanks for watching, please subscribe because I have my boat done now and am going to make alot more vidoes this summer.

    Capt Duane

  • Nice video!

I wish I knew what half of those fish were, including that big school near this end of this section.

Did you ever encounter the actual bridge pilings? I assume there's a ton of seaweed growth on them by now.
