TOMIE - SYDNEY UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL 2011

Tsukiko is a shy girl with a passion for photography and always feeling as if she exists in her sister Tomie's shadow. One day, as Tsukiko is impulsively photographing Tomie, she bears witness to a metal rod impaling her sister. On the 1st anniversary of Tomie's death, Tsukiko is offered the job of photographer for her school newspaper by no other than Toshio, her deceased sister's boyfriend, whom Tsukiko has always had a crush on. That same day, the doorbell rings and there is Tomie, back from the dead, even briefly evoking her own death! The film then masterfully descends into an uncanny and perverse nightmare wrought with Cronenberg-esque horror. Talking severed heads, body mutations and destructive tentacles takes over as reality and creates an endlessly oppressive atmosphere. This film is the latest adaption of the Tomie Manga series, which centres around a mysterious girl who appears again and again in various people's lives and haunts them until their eventual end.
