Baritone Thomas Hampson is at home in the digital world like few other artists. Twitter, Facebook, master classes via online video: All of these media are used by him with a passion to reach his audience and his students around the world. In our video, he discusses with Sarah Willis, horn player with the Berliner Philharmoniker, how the possibilities of new technology can be used with classical music, and how it changes the way musicians and audience interact. The conversation takes place in the Berliner Philharmoniker's video studio where the concert broadcasts for the Digital Concert Hall - the orchestra's video platform - are produced. Immediately prior to this recording, Thomas Hampson had himself just performed in the Digital Concert Hall in a concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker, soprano Renée Fleming and conductor Christian Thielemann.

  • My goodness. At 35:46 we get this: "I firmly believe in teaching people how to swim; I don't think damning the ocean is a very good idea. Ever."

Can someone please nominate Thomas Hampson as chief executive of the universe?

But seriously, it gave me chills. This is a brilliant, timely, perfect interview -- and the best I've heard in years about classical music. Total gratitude.

  • This blows any TED talk out of the water. One might say a half-hour is a long time to watch a YouTube video, but the sheer density of relevant, progressive and insightful commentary on such a wide range of topics musical and technical makes it seem like no time at all. The breadth of this man's knowledge on technical topics given a worldwide concert career is astounding.

  • This interview introduced me to the Berlin Philharmonic's Digital Concert Hall - an amazing resource for classical music afficionados! Highly recommended!

  • This is fantastic. Pretty much everything said here is absolutely spot on. Please do more stuff like this!

  • Of course you are creating access points (and new audience) among new generations, and we're going to help you out raising curiosity!

Hugs from Italy, you amazing "Builders"! :) - referring to: "Den Begriff der Bildung"!!! :)

  • fascinating conversation. i'm a classical music internet addict and am always searching for new sites and live concert presentations. and my biggest frustration is this constant searching - there doesn't seem to be a central source that informs a person as to what's all out there on the web.

  • Thank you so much Mr. Hampson! You spoke the absolute truth in the most wonderful way, and people that watch this video becoming even more interested and thirsty about Classical Music. Thank you!

  • i really agree with what this man says... i can say that internet gave me ''access'' to classical music and that really changed my life, and i live for the day i'll find some money and listen a huge live classical concert :) i'm sure listening it live is really different :)

  • This is all nice and well and commendable but do we have to sound sooooo affected? The male version of Jessye Norman anyone?
