I use a cheapo irish penny whistle (another hobbie). Nothing beats hearing the hills echoing a good irish jig or reel. For an emergency whistle, I can pull the fipple block off, and use the whistle without the tube. Because it's also a musical instrument, the fipple is precision, and it VERY loud. It weigh's in at 1.17 oz, so it's not UL, but provide some entertainment, also. Cost: US $10.00.

I have the ACR whistle and carried it for about a year. Then I discovered the Seasense Marine whistle. Found it at Walmart. It is a flat orange plastic whistle . I now carry it on my key ring as an EDC so its always with me. The Seasense is a 3 chord whistle that in my mind is louder and the sound seems to carry better than the ACR whistle. Just weighed it at 1/3 oz with the metal split ring I use to hang it from my keyring.

I use the UST Jetstream whistle. It is very compact and fits around my neck really well.

Try the Hart Tew Whistle and see the video. It has the appearance of Military "Dog Tags", but belts out a loud, clear sound. It can be used in many pitches, tones & levels of volume...the loudest on the market! You can also develop your own tune to find your friends or family in a crowd or in the wilderness. The possible uses for this whistle are endless. I am the sole distributor as of 2011. I package them in bulk orders of 50 or 100 as well as in singles. whistle4heather @ rocketmail (.com)

I've been changing to sternum strap whistles. I have and still use old military ball whistles as they seem to be heard from long distance. Actually tested these out with a friend and he says they were the most extreame and noticeable. Thanks for the video. Always of interest.

The Storm Whistles get to about 120dbs give or take, can be heard through 10mm of glass and down to 50ft under water. I read that this whistles is use by men in the military to assist helicopter pilots in their landings, thats crazy! so you can imagine how lour that must be. My only issue is that I dont like wearing things around my neck when hiking. I feel like its a safety hazard. Try to find a break away lanyard.

After doing a lot of research I narrowed it down to two. I believe the first one was a FOX and the second, the winner was the Storm! Storm Whistles!!! Are loudest whistle on the market. It's unique patented design allows it to be heard under water, up to 50 feet, because the sounding chamber forces all water to be purged when the whistle is blown. 75% greater than other referee and safety whistles.

That song sucks. Can't you play anything else? :)

Sorry, I only know how play that song and J. S. Bach's Fugue in g-minor. I just didn't think Bach was appropriate for this video.

Hey Jason, I just bought some of the going gear little whistles that attach to a life jacket. But even with the instructions, I can't figure out how to attach them to let's say a zipper. If you had a spare moment and could demonstrate that in a video that would really be helpful. Maybe I'm dense, I just can't figure it out.

Did you see the diagram I put in the video? That should clear it up. If not, just email Marshall--he's an awesome guy and will be able to explain it.

I have one of the emergency 5 in 1 tools that I keep in my pocket. It has a decent whistle, waterproof match container w/ 20 strike anywhere matches, a cheap compass (it does point north, though, with decent accuracy - checked it multiple times) a small signal mirror that seems mostly useless, and a striker bar for the matches which is basically worthless. It's a bit bulky, but low cost ... having some dry matches and some sort of a functional compass seems beneficial.
Good practical topic.

My friend has one of those. The only thing that worries me is that if you lose it, you lose 5 things instead of one.
