Senator Charles 'Chuck' Grassley (R-IA) during the Prescription Drug Act debate - Nov. 25, 2003, and Andrea Mitchell with Nancy-Ann DeParle, White House Director of Health Reform - June 22, 2009. C-SPAN (aired: 11/25/03) and MSNBC News Live (aired: 06/22/09).

Mini-Bar Bio: Charles Grassley was elected to the Senate in 1981, and during this debate he was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance (Jan 3, 2003 thru Jan 3, 2007); he remains as the current ranking member.

Regarding the bill: Rep. Bill Tauzin (R-LA) was co-sponsor of the Prescription Drug Act of 2003 and on January 3, 2005, the same day he left Congress, Tauzin began work as the head of PhRMA (Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America), a powerful lobby group for pharmaceutical companies. It was reported that they had offered more than $2.5 million per year for his services, outbidding the Motion Picture Association of America, which had offered Tauzin $1 million to lobby for it.

  • I have heard rumor that if they do not give us this health care the people are going to take it to the streets.. they are calling it a coffee party... Seriously I know the name sounds lame.. but I am not making it up.. Who names this stuff anyway? If such event really happens I think I will get involved.

  • I don't know much about doughnut holes but Chuck Grassley is a complete asshole. How these dinosaurs are able to maintain their positions in the Congress and Senate is beyond me. They must be voted out ASAP. He is a protector of corporate interest, nothing more.

  • The Bill will close 50 % of it. At least Obama is trying. Republican want 100% donut hole to continue benefit the Insurance and Pharma.

  • Count me in, too

  • A deal with PhRMA will be like putting a bandaid on a broken arm.

Meanwhile, at least 1/6 of the population will have too little or no health care insurance, at all; and as the recession broadens (and it will) that number will grow sharply.

We're in a lot of trouble, but our so-called representatives in government continue to sell us out to the very bastards who've destroyed our economy, our communities, and our way of life in order to make themselves and their "friends" rich at our expense.

  • Count me in.

  • Senator Grassley (R-IA) is... a "doughnut hole".
