Mata Hari was the stage name of Margaretha Geertruida "Grietje" Zelle MacLeod (August 7, 1876 - October 15, 1917), a Dutch exotic dancer, courtesan and accused spy who, although possibly innocent, was executed by firing squad in France for espionage for Germany during World War I.

Mata Hari's real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, a 'Jewish''-Frisian girl from the Netherlands. Her life as a 'spy' (double agent) for the Allies + Central Powers has however never been conclusively proven. Perhaps a case of 'wrong place(s) at the wrong time(s), with the wrong person(s). Who is to know for sure/ The mystery remains
