Mushrooms have traditionally been a vital part of Russian cuisine, coming in handy in times of a bad harvest and replacing meat during Lent. In old Russia, in some rural areas mushroom hunting brought in more cash than farming, while profits from exporting dried mushrooms to Europe amounted to hundreds of thousands of roubles. Nowadays, mushroom picking is nothing short of a national pastime.
