Thanks to a digital camera with a time lapse mode, I've developed a fascination with time lapse photography. It presents everyday life in a whole new perspective. Seemingly stationary things, like clouds, move in beautiful ways, and things we're used to seeing move in realtime, like traffic, move in patterns that can only be seen at high speed.

This is my commute from home to campus in the morning, then campus to home in the afternoon. The camera was mounted on a tabletop tripod positioned on my dashboard. It took a couple spills until I learned how to anchor it properly -- sorry about that.

Equipment:
Camera: Canon Powershot G9, 1 second time lapse
Car: 2002 Toyota Prius

Filmed on January 14, 2008

Music: "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott

  • 1:07 lololl its a prius!

  • And the car the video was shot from is also a Prius! ;-)

  • How did you keep the camera still?

  • I didn't always keep it still, if you'll notice the chaos during the word scroll. ;-) I used a tabletop tripod (with flexible cable-like legs) and sat it on the dashboard; it's okay if there are no fast speed changes or turns, in which case I have to steady the tripod with one hand (admittedly not the safest setup). It might be possible to rig something with velcro. I've also been meaning to experiment with a regular size tripod on the passenger-side floorboard with the seat all the way back.

  • What state was this filmed in? I thought I saw Kentucky license plates in several different parts of the video, but couldn't tell for sure. Regardless, cool time lapse vid!

  • Right you are... filmed in Lexington, Kentucky during a drive to the University of Kentucky campus. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Fantastic :D My camera has the time lapse mode aswell, i've taken a few stabs at the art, too. :)

  • i have nothing against priuses... prii? WHATS THE PLURAL OF PRIUS? anyway it's part of Jeff Dunham's comedy skit. im glad that hybrids like the prius get high mileage and lower emissions, unlike my car, the polar opposite (Dodge Challenger) :) cool time lapse 5*

  • Ah, I see I was right about guessing the correct respective license plates. Thanks for answering my question.
