Yes, I realize I'm almost a year late to the party but I felt that some of the other reviews out there missed some pretty big points about 4e so I'm throwing this out there. I was inspired by watching a couple other reviews, most notably this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWKVgacYIRE&feature=related

Unlike most other reviews this one also talks about the electronic side of D&D.

I apologize in advance for how my voice seems to change from time to time. I made this in quite a few sections and then did a lot of splicing and trimming because I'm not a very good speaker at length. This is the first time I've ever done a real speaking part for a video so I learned a lot.

  • the reasons that i hate 4e just so happen to be problems with ALL the D&D games.

if i asked you to build a character that uses a bow and is NOT a ranger, what would you do?

if i asked you to make a character that does decent damage in melee combat but DOESNT have muscles up the wazzoo how would you accomplish that?

  • @jonathino001

Admittedly, there aren't many classes that make use of bows aside from Rangers, Rogues, and Seekers but that's because martial classes have been so neglected. As for non-strength melee types there are tons of options: Avengers, Rogues, Druids, Swordmages, Monk, Ardent, and Battlemind. A lot of those options are expanded upon in later books but the rogue is right there in the PHB1. Do your research.

  • Hey n00bdragon another question, I live in Australia, do you know if there is any possible way of getting a hold of the D&D 4th Edition in Australian stores? Or do you have to Ebay it.

  • @peterchamp I live in the U.S. so I don't know exactly what the distribution situation is like in Australia. I did some google-fu and it looks like your best bet is small mom-and-pop game shops and even then it'll be iffy and probably expensive. Call ahead and make sure they have it before you empty your gas tank driving all over. Hope this helps!

  • Just wanna put it out there. 3.5 has its gaps, but that is nothing a little home rules can't fix. I DM and play 3.5 all the time, and from what i have heard about 4th it is horribly broken. Here was the conversation: "yeah 4th came out. Really? yeah, they made tiefling a class and boosted it. Oh that sucks. Also they improved the artificer as well." Really? I know you want to make it fun, but making the game so easy that all it is noobs who whined about magic items in books playing stinks

  • 4th Edition Sucks, go 1st and 2nd Edition

That may be, but then Fighters need high really high Dex to gain any benefit from shooting from afar. When Dex is high, heavy armor is a waste for a fighter, as heavy armor reduces the Dex bonus anyway...

Rogues + Weapon Finesse + good Bluff bonus in melee combat = painful for your enemy at later levels...

  • @jonathino001 I am not experienced with 4e, but in 3.5 a fighter could get all the feats for archery faster than the ranger can... starts with better armor proficiency, too!

As for melee... I would definately suggest the rogue. Especially with Weapon Finesse.

  • @inlife9 Yes- friends/allys whatever you wish to call them is a tool for building encounters. They are still disgraced slaves in my games.

  • As a DM of 20+ years & many many systems. I love 4e, All my players love it now. Some, like me, originally dismissed it. I came back to it later to read for kicks, and browse the pictures. I started seeing the layers in it's simplicity. I also realized that most the reviews that hate 4e are either wrong or lieing about alot of it. I dont think any game is perfect, but 4e does what it does greatly. and makes epic fights easy & fun to run. We also play with no miniatures alot. 1sq=5feet. pie!

  • @jonathino001 noobdragon covered your other secion, yeah def do your research and bring some imagination to your game. there are tons of way to tackle your questions

  • @jonathino001 i would tell you to play a fighter, fighters are just warriors specializing on any type of weapon. I would tell you to just use a bow and specialize in using it with feats. There are plenty of ways to go about archery. Fighter/ranger/rouge or just focusing on it plus prestige classes. Also there are given guidelines to make your own class. So the only limit on the game is your imagination, so apparantly yours seems pretty limited lol.

  • 4th edition is an abomination. Not only is it a total cash grab (it forces you to buy minitures and forces you to buy multiple books simply to get your hands on character classes that should be in the 1st players handbook, etc). 4th edition is all about power-gaming and min-maxing. Its garbage. I can't belive there are fools who think 4th edition is in any way an improvement over 3rd edition. Its soulless. FUCK WOTC.

  • @wblanier13 I have not read anything from 4th, but Driders were always used as slaves by Drow. I guess thats could be in a classification as same team/ friends in rules terms...?
