SO this wasn't really a formal interview, so I just kept asking the questions I had lined up til my camera battery died :D

Yoyoyo!

Hey this is me interviewing my all-time-favorite-Japan-role-model. His name is Arudou Debito, he is a naturalized Japanese citizen who is a college professor all the way up in Hokkaido and also is civil rights activist. A couple days ago he was in Tokyo and we got together for a couple drinks and discussing how awesome we are ;)

Topics in the Final part:
-He doesn't know Kung Fu
-David Spector

  • Oh yeah, Sam, do you have any plans of Naturalizing when you are eligible?

The advantages of Naturalizing seem huge seeing as how the Japanese government doesn't want to give "normal Japanese jobs" to foreigners because of the recession Japans been so close too and it would be easier to get a Loan!

  • If I had established a career and started a family here, basically making it a long term thing, staying in Japan, then yeah, I would naturalize, it just seems like the final step, so why not?

Like I said, it doesn't matter to me what other foriegners think, because they have are probably have never lived in Japan for an extended amount of time and even the ones that have, probably haven't even tried to immerse themselves in the culture, so that only leaves the natives views to be concerned for.

  • Great vlog !

That book you where talking about 7:00min into it , do you have a link for ?

I would love to try that way.

  • Great vid!!!

  • Debito here. Final bit about the question about "futility" of English language instruction in Japan (before battery died). It's not as bad as it could be, since people here generally can read romaji; I've had Chinese students who couldn't even do that, since they specialized solely in learning Japanese and skipped Roman letters. Not criticizing the system, but I'm not sure I'd use a word as harsh as "futile". Ineffective, sure, if the Brass Ring is bilinguality.

  • Sam, interesting and enjoyable video series. I took me a couple of years to go through them all - finally - which I did this afternoon. Interesting.

  • There are so many different types of people with different mindsets and thinking. I would seem that people appt to travel are very open to new things and have the same oppinion of some of the closed minded know it all attitudes of their country men. Some people are just better ambasadors and some are just idiots! I used to get really embaresed at the latter when I was in the military. It was embaresing how some ppl act outside their country. You'd think good manners would take over... Naw.

  • I cant believe I watch the whole thing! Dang what kind of card did you have in your're camera? This is really a good interview. This is good journalism. A lil rough but poignant and relevant. Thanks for thinking of this. Oh and dancing... Niggah!!!

  • that was a good interview series, between all the dancing stuff something serious, keep it up!

  • Known troublemaker. This guy looks like he was a failure in America and he's angry because he's a failure in Japan too.
