The four members of the indie rock band left 'The Lair' at Sydney's Metro Theatre with a giddy feeling of victory and the grand prize of up to $50,000 recording and marketing spend from Sony Music and up to $15,000 from Sony/ATV Publishing.
Lead singer of the indie rock quartet, Nik Thompson was ecstatic and overwhelmed by the response of the crowd and the feedback from the judges. "I feel like a unicorn who's just seen a double rainbow," he said.
In addition to this announcement, MySchoolAct and Big Day Out sponsor Motorola also announced the winners who will perform at the Big Day Out 2012 in their local market. The five grand finalist Acts were selected from across Australia and transported to Sydney on Saturday 10th December to participate in a workshop hosted by SAE & Qantm College. The weekend commenced with a jam session in the MySchoolAct warehouse followed by a series of educational sessions run by some of Australia's top music professionals including; Julian Hewitt from Media Arts Lawyers (represents Missy Higgins, Pete Murray, Tame Impala, Operator Please) Adam Zammit, CEO of Peer Group Media and marketing guru Shae Constantine from Sony Music.
The following day, the Acts had their first insight into the life of a touring musician, sound checking and waiting patiently in the green room for their media interviews with full hair, make-up treatment and 'parental approved' rider of sandwiches and lemonade. 200 invited guests flooded into the Metro theatre from 6pm and each Act performed two original songs to a panel of music industry experts. The Acts were judged on their ability to engage with the crowd, their musicality, synchronicity and originality of the material.
Judge Glen Matthews- COO and co-founder of MySchoolAct; "The front man for 44th Sunset was unique, he was engaging with the audience and he lifted the crowd to a new height with his performance," he said.
500 talented high school Acts have worked tirelessly for months, writing, recording, self-promoting and performing in the hope of capturing the attention of the 39,394 passionate music fans who registered their support at www.myschoolact.com. Glenn Matthews was excited by the response to the competition; "each year MySchoolAct just gets better and better, and 2012 will be no exception," he said.
